Our group of 6 enjoyed a lovely evening at Osteria Baralla last night to celebrate a birthday. We were welcomed by the friendly Jonathan who was an excellent host. All the food was great, with the highlight being the bistecca florentine steak which was fabulous. A complimentary dessert for the birthday guest was a nice touch from the lovely and friendly waitress, Aurora. Overall, this Osteria is a fantastic choice if you’re visiting Lucca, highly recommend.

1 year ago Sam Shaw- why does he think this place is on the list?

Fantastic place, the staff squeezed us in even though they were extremely busy with a large group booking and looked after us well. The food was fantastic, fresh and authentic dishes which tasted excellent. The tiramisu was quite possibly the best I've ever had and the traditional filled pasta had such a rich flavour and texture.

1 year ago Rebecca Scanlondescribed this experience as follows:

Delicious pasta in the heart of Lucca. We had the ragu, beetroot pasta dish & gnocchi and it was very tasty! The tiramisu was one of the best I’ve tried! Staff are very efficient and the location is perfect, just off the busy main amphitheater. Make sure to reserve a table in advance!

There are always so many restaurants to choose from and we picked this as we did our sightseeing based on the menu at the door and the outside seating. Returning for a meal later it was busy we had to sit inside which turned out just great. The restaurant has a lovely ambience was great. I had the beef stew...wonderful a taste sensation served with polenta and a basic salad and lightly toasted bread. My partner had papperdella pasta and fresh puccini mushrooms...again delicious. A simple starter of bread , olive oil and basalmic vinager. Really worth the money and would return again.

My husband has been coming to Baralla for years with his family and his mother will not eat anywhere else in Lucca. Get your wallet ready because it’s going to be expensive. However, it will be delicious authentic food, a real experience of Tuscan dining. This where the locals eat for a reason. The restaurant beautiful with vaulted ceilings, it is very charming.

Our first time in Lucca. This restaurant was recommended by our hotel. We didn’t have a reservation but luckily we had space. It’s definitely a top class restaurant with champagne served for starters. The dishes were amazing. The service was professional and the ambiance relaxed and cozy.

1 month ago Kevin Galtreyhow did he rate it?

A very pleasant Sunday lunch. This place is very traditional with formal service, but not at all stuffy. The menu is fairly local but with plenty of recognisable choices. The only downside is point is that our pasta starter (Ravioli with ricotta) was for us overcooked, virtually no bite, but beautifully presented. The mains (goat & grilled veal) were superb. The wine list is great with local & regional favourites including half bottles and decent wines by the glass. Quite a sophisticated atmosphere, well dressed staff and immaculate table settings. There were plenty of families & groups as well as couples. All in all, highly recommended.

4 months ago Jerry Huangexplained best how he liked it:

The taxi driver in Florence recommended us visit this restaurant if we come to Lucca, so we decided to listen the advice from the local and give it a shot. It did took a while to find it, but totally worth it, they offered to take off our coat just when we entered the restaurant. The waiter/ waitress were very friendly, our food was amazing, soup, pasta and dessert, all great. Will absolutely come back if we visit Lucca.

6 months ago Greg Slonimwrote only this about this place:

A fantastic restaurant located in the heart of the historical city center. This charming and welcoming spot offers exceptional service and phenomenal food. I’ve had the pleasure of dining there twice—once in 2020 and again in 2024. Both times, the service was impeccable, and the food was outstanding. The interior is equally memorable, with old pots and pans hanging from the ancient ceiling beams, adding to its unique character. We enjoyed pumpkin soup, chicken liver pâté, homemade ravioli with meat sauce, and pasta with truffles. Every dish was fabulous. Their bread was something special - especially the dark sourdough. The wine selection was equally impressive. I highly recommend booking in advance.

5 months ago Sam Shawevaluates this place as follows:

Was taken here for a meal on a work trip on suggestion of the local contacts and it did not disappoint for an authentic and high quality experience in Lucca. The hare paperdelle in particular was fantastic with rich, balanced flavour. We had local wine which was fantastic (see photo) and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Lovely restaurant just outside the walls of the city of Lucca. Stumbled upon this locals' gem. Delicious food, friendly, efficient service, and warm and inviting ambiance. Very reasonable prices as well. We will definitely return.

1 year ago Will Reeveswrote only this for this place:

This was the best restaurant we went to in Italy. Brilliant for me (gluten free) and my partner. The house red wine was delicious and only cost €13. They provided free the best gluten free bread roll I’ve had in my life, I couldn’t tell the difference compared to normal bread. The gluten free Tortelli was amazing. We ended having two courses each and the veal was also great. The total price for two courses each, a bottle of wine, a bottle of water and the cover charge was €69, which was a similar price we had paid elsewhere for a single course each. My biggest regret of my trip to Italy was I couldn’t come to this restaurant twice.

1 year ago Rebecca Scanlonevaluates this place as follows:

Gorgeous restaurant, serving delicious Tuscan food. The staff were friendly and the food was full of flavour! We had the bistecca and lamb chops, both were delicious! The cheesecake was very light for dessert, tasty! Make sure to reserve to get a table as they hook up quickly! The decor of the restaurant was very pretty.

1 year ago Ghislain Huonexplained best how he liked it:

The best way to find a gem is to.ask your local bar or cafe where to go. The design and seating leads you to believe that it is going to cost you an arm and a leg, but the natural wine selection is sexy and the whole range is within reasonable price point. The rabbit is so tender and the quality of the t bone was far the best tasted in Italy. This is at 9.30pm where chef are normally rushing etc but our experience was.exceptional. we have not order the dessert art the time that i write this review but If it is not as good as the standard than other courses, i would be surprised. Don't miss it..this was our.last supper for.the holidays and it was the best meal so far. X

Delicious fresh food. Our group of 9 was treated with good service and such a variety of food. We shared pasta dishes, meat and fish main courses, and many starters. Nothing disappointed, so rather than naming this and that dish, try many and share. Your servers will treat you like family.

8 months ago Ivona Mihaescuhow did he rate it?

I had the risotto which was super tasty, quite al dente. My mun didn’t really enjoy the fish of the day as it was quite oily. The raw platter was awesome and the tuna tartar was brilliant, but the portion was quite small for the price. There were a lot of wasps and bees flying around our table so unfortunately I can’t give 5 stars. I liked the place and the service was great though so I would still recommend it

10 months ago Erika McRobertsevaluates this place as follows:

We had the most lovely time at this restaurant!!! We ate on the restaurant side, not the pizzeria. The wait staff was very attentive and were very invested in making sure we had everything we needed. The host Simoné, got us started with her friendly smiles and personality. Our primary waiter, Walter, was the most pleasant and delightful man and made our meal so lovely! He even helped my mom crack open her lobster when she couldn’t figure out how to do it. The setting being right on the Lucca wall was picturesque and beautiful. A quiet setting with delicious upscale food. Very sophisticated, well plated dishes. This evening with my parents was perfect!! Thank you thank you for this wonderful night!! *would not recommend for children.

10 months ago Sara Readwrote only this about this place:

This was a fantastic little find during a trip to Lucca, Italy. The staff were warm and welcoming. Their knowledge of the menu was excellent and incredibly helpful. We initially just stopped for a drink but when they flaunted their gluten free options, I was hooked. We went to the pizzeria for lunch and loved it so much we decided to go back for dinner before our train home (being close to the train station helped, too). The Gluten Free pizza was fantastic as was my partner's 'normal' pizza. On our return for dinner, the quality somehow ramped up. The flavours were amazing and a well thought out recipe. Just as we thought the taste explosions had stopped, they brought out dessert! Anyone with food allergies will have no problem eating here, their knowledge of the menu and the fantastic kitchen make you feel completely at ease when ordering and eating. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves food.

1 year ago The Highland Kitchenhow did he rate it?

We have visited Lucca alot over the last ten years and a couple of times a year we make an effort to eat at San Colombano on Lucca"s city walls. Since celebrating my 40th birthday, six years ago,  the restaurant continues to improve each year with the food, the service and the furnishings. The staff are always lovely and dispite myself finding it hard to speak Italian, the staff are multilingual or speak "pigeon English' and allow you to try speaking Italian or step in to assist you. They have great attention to detail, creating a very relaxed atmosphere to dine in. I do recommend booking.

7 months ago Lina Giedraitėwhat can I say about this place?

We went for dinner as a couple, we rarely choose such places, but we did not regret it. The service is excellent, the team speaks English, the atmosphere is also excellent. The food is very tasty. We reserved a table in the morning, it seems that we did well because there was no free table in the evening.

What our travelers says:

1 month ago Tom Jonasson: it is necessary to add to this place:

Very touristic place - too many items on the menu. Mediocre quality of food - Mezzo Salumi e Mezzo Formaggio was okay, but not great - supermarket quality. Tordelli zucchini e funghi was not good - sticky, and funghi were completely in the way - did not eat them - not a good dish. Lokal wine okay, not great, but expensive - best part was the Soufflé Cioccolato - really delicious! Service was also fine.

4 months ago Dan R. Deneyerwrote only this for this place:

Stepping into this osteria feels like visiting the living room of an eccentric collector - lively, and brimming with quirky objects that defy all aesthetic logic. The décor seems eager to tell a thousand stories, perhaps too many. The staff adds a theatrical touch to the ambiance: two waitresses without uniforms - a bohemian twist, perhaps? - and a third comfortably seated in the back, busy with accounting, presumably to make sense of the rather steep menu prices. As for the food, the menu boasts an abundance of Tuscan specialties, so extensive it feels like a culinary encyclopedia. If nothing else, it’s impossible not to find something to whet your appetite. Portions are generous - a plus for anyone who likes to leave a restaurant feeling full - and while the quality isn’t flawless, it’s still enjoyable except for the subpar dessert. The service could be described as rustic, which is a polite way of saying casual and a bit improvised.

6 months ago Jens Ole Thomsenevaluates this place as follows:

Amazing Tagliatelle tartufo. A must try. Agnesi is a good waiter. Splendid English speaking. And serve with a smile ☺️ Highly recommended. You become in good mood here

6 years ago Mark Wlaz: it is necessary to add to this place:

On a Sunday afternoon we stumbled upon this osteria. The fact that there was outside seating, and that it was full of local families (presumably fresh from church) drew us in. They advertise typical Tuscan-style dishes, and they did not disappoint. Since there were four of us, we were able to try a variety of plates - an appetizer, soup, salad, pizza, and main dish. All were enjoyable, and reasonably priced.

Recently visited Lucca during Lucca comics and Games. We travelled across. Italy for 2 weeks and this is by far the best food we had during the trip. We ate here on our first night in Lucca and on our last because it was so good.

What our travelers says:

1 month ago Kevin Galtrey: it is necessary to add to this place:

Very rustic, small space, lots of local dishes, very helpful and friendly staff. Table turnover is quite swift, lots of families and small groups having a quick meal, not rushed but easily out within 90 minutes. Would definitely visit again, but may not recommend to our friends who prefer something close to a fine dining experience. But if you like local & rustic it’s worth it.

6 months ago Francesca Piliwrote only this for this place:

Overall 5 stars for the atmosphere and the food. We arrived at a very busy time and service was a bit chaotic but food was amazing. We had special gnocchi with truffle and tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms plus house wine. Complementary focaccia was just out of the oven, great and tasty.

7 months ago Ann Lwrote only this about this place:

We loved all the food served...right from the focaccia bread at the start as it was so warm, fresh and fragrant. We ordered the caesar salad and meat balls as we wanted a lighter dinner. Beef carpaccio was sooooo good- definitely a must eat. The waiters were professional and friendly. Prices were reasonable.

2 months ago sandy panda: it is necessary to add to this place:

i liked the bread it was warm and freshly cut🔥 the pizza had too much cheese for my liking, i think their dishes were quite unique i forgot what we ordered like beef tripe and some sausage and soup i think

8 months ago Vinay Chandraexplained best how he liked it:

We arrived for dinner without a reservation on a Wednesday evening and while we could not get a seat outside, were seated indoors in a very charming and rustic interior. The restaurant was filled with locals and the atmosphere festive and loud. We ordered Picci cacio e pepe and a pizza Napolitano and they were tasty and flavorful and among the best we have had in Italy. The prices were very reasonable. Our waiter however was a little out of it and was having a bad evening and that is the reason why I am deducting a star. We ended the evening with a great Buccellato and Tiramisu.

4. place gets Trattoria da Leo

Trattoria da Leo
We give 8.2/10!. This place was visited and rated 2362-times

What our travelers says:

2 weeks ago Paul Johnson: it is necessary to add to this place:

If the clientelle are local and range from young families to elderly couples, you know you are eating in a well loved restaurant. This was the case when we ate at the da Leo . Reminded me of the family run Les Routies of France. Good tasty regional food , well prepared, and generous portions . We were not disappointed. The entree was a mixture of hams, cheese, and olives .Fresh and ample for 2 people. This was followed by spinach Ravioli with a beautiful homemade pumpkin sauce. My wife chose the pasta with rabbit and olives, again made from fresh ingredients and certainly meaty. Had ordered the ribs and potatoes after seeing the neighbouring tables meal, but at this point, I was full so the waiter kindly cancelled the order. A tiramisu was the crowning glory to the meal. My wife commented that it was the best she had eaten all week We had the house red and white, which again was most acceptable . The waiter spoke perfect English, and the menu came in both languages, which helped the tourist who were there that evening. Go there or you will miss the chance to eat like a Tuscan does.

9 months ago Nigel Merrettwhat can I say about this place?

A busy trattoria that is exactly what I think a trattoria should be, with no frills, quick service, the owner working in the business as well. Plenty of locals seemed to be dining which is a good sign. I loved the spare (pork) ribs with the roast potatoes, and the tortelli al ragù di carne was excellent. White wines were very limited, so we just had the vino della casa in a carafe and that was perfectly fine.

2 years ago Edward Moscardinihow did he rate it?

The food was awful 😞. The only thing we ordered that had any flavor were the ribs. The caprese had so much oregano it was hard to eat. The tortellini in brodo tasted like dirty dish water with store bought pasta. The ravioli were again store bought with yet another disappointing sauce. Amazing we wasted a meal here.

6 years ago Alex Chen- why does he think this place is on the list?

A friendly, affordable, and delicious trattoria! The staff is wonderful and the food is excellent. The menu changes occasionally which allows for pleasant variety if you come regularly. Lucchese and Tuscan delicacies on offer. For those concerned about summer heat, they have air-conditioned indoor seating. The outdoor seating is lovely as well. The restaurant is great for those with children as they have toys and entertainment on hand to keep the kids occupied.

2 years ago Charles Chan- why does he think this place is on the list?

Delicious and affordable food. Nested in a old town with classical interior design, nice dining ambience. Fried items are definitely comfort food and uses clean oil. Pasta are well made and flavorful. Service staffs are friendly as well Recommended!

I’ve been a client ever since it opened and to be honest it has never disappointed. Amazing appetizers, perfectly cooked roasts, insta-worthy burgers and huge chocolate-covered soft pretzels are just some of the amazing items on the menu. And don’t get me started on the amazing selection of beers! The atmosphere is also very cozy and fun, just like being in a Bavarian pub! Totally recommended! ❤️

6 years ago Jamie Wolfsaid the following about this gem:

I will give it 2 stars for the convenient location for parking however, while I really hoped it would be a good, nice change from Italian food, it tastes like processed chemicals. All of it. The servers are nice but the service is fair to be generous. We have been a few times, hoping each was just an isolated bad experience but I sincerely would skip this and try something else. When we asked for the air to be turned on in 33 degree stale heat, they did and 5 minutes later, “it broke”....With each attempt to redeem themselves, it just gets worse. The former manager seems to be gone and things have gone south and fast since his departure.

The interior is so cozy and homey (makes you feel like in a kindergarten), and the pasta was homemade, fresh, so tasty, light and beautiful! We also got a Buratta salad a jug of wine. Friendly staff, timely service and such a atmosphere. Easily, the best night and best restaurant we had on our short trip to Lucca, Pisa and Florence♡

Traditional home made pasta at its best! We acted on a recommendation for this place and it didn’t disappoint. Menu is vegetarian, small and delicious. We had the dishes explained to us fully by the excellent staff. Payment at the desk rather than on the table, which when it’s busy took a while. Made up for by the quality of the pasta and the Italian IPA on draft.

Quaint restaurant right around the corner from our airbnb. We were warmly greeted when we arrived. Great selection of food and wine. Loved the idea using handmade art for the table flags. The did arrived quickly and tasted amazing. Forgot to capture the cheesecake before we ate most of it.

6 months ago Tiffany Van den Abeele- why does he think this place is on the list?

We chose the ravioli with pistachios and the tagliatelle del bosco - and so did the people before us, and the people before them. I can clearly understand why! Both dishes were absolutely delicious, one of the best dinners we had during our stay in Tuscany. We ended the evening with a tiramisu, which was also really good! We are two vegetarians and had many options to choose from. There was a small line (that became longer once we sat down), but the food came really quickly! Highly recommend coming here.

What our travelers says:

1 month ago Warren & Julie Travel Nomad Expats: it is necessary to add to this place:

As avid travelers, we have been to 50 countries and many restaurants. We do a YouTube channel and share our experiences and expenses. We were doing a video about.Lucca and we’re having a pleasant day, and came to this restaurant on the recommendation of a Viewer. Since this was more or less a local recommendation, we had intended to incorporate our meal into a video and came with reasonable expectations. We have to say, we will not be putting this restaurant into our channel‘s videos, because we don’t want to have a negative experience impact somebody’s thoughts about this city. The city was fantastic, but this restaurant was a complete disaster. The chicken was tough as shoe leather, the grilled vegetables were mush, and the baked cod was too salty to eat. We left more than half the food uneaten. Seeing how not one out of three dishes would be considered edible it was a consistent fail. I informed the waitress that the food was horrible, she was very defensive and very rude, so I cannot comment positively on the service, which up to that point was acceptable. My wife and I have very different taste and for us to both believe the food was amongst the worst we’ve had in Europe says a lot. If you go, you have been warned, there are so many restaurants that looked so appetizing that we passed on our way to this restaurant that we should’ve stopped at first. We always use euros in our credit card transactions however the waitress chose US dollar before I noticed so we will get the worse exchange rate for the meal. Not worth five euros much less €36.50.

2 months ago Gohar Jamal- why does he think this place is on the list?

I recently had a chance to visit Lucca and upon being there on the lunch time I had no clue where to eat, so my go to option is always ask the locals. So I asked two different locals they both recommended me this restaurant and when I had my lunch there I realized why this place is famous even among the locals. So, if you happen to be in Lucca and look for authentic local food check this restaurant out. I had Ravioli and it was so delicious 🤤 plus the environment was great and I’m sure there other food option will be nice too.

This was likely the restaurant in which I most appreciated my Italian food, during my visit to Italy. It's a casual, uncomplicated, simple restaurant, packing a few years of history and excellent food. The place is nice, the atmosphere is pleasant. I've stayed inside, where the atmosphere is not as nice. Book well in advance, so that you can secure a table outside (I tried booking on the same day, and they already were totally booked). The service was acceptable, the waiter nice and helpful. But the service was really slow. If I would have discovered this place before my last night in Italy, I would have surely made it my regular canteen! The food was amazing. The marinated aubergines were delicious, and the diavola penne that I had, cooked to perfection. I was so impressed, I had a secondi piatti for the first time, during my trip!

Great place, tasty local food and very friendly service. Make sure you book your table upfront since they can be fully booked. (Happened to us.) But we were in no rush, so it’s not a big issue. Definitely recommend!
