10. place deserves Rio Colorado Waterfalls

Rio Colorado Waterfalls
We give 8/10!. This place was visited and rated 904-times

What our travelers says:

7 months ago Rutger Oorsprongevaluates this place as follows:

After a 5km drive on an unpaved but decent enough road we arrived and were welcomed by the locals who organize this together with the municipality. Gloria our tour guide who lives there nearby as well was amazing. We did the long hike and she was great. So overall it is absolutely a recommendation: Fun, save, cheap (please tip though as this really helps the locals) and beautiful.

3 months ago Joshua Vwhat can I say about this place?

Great hike. Waterfalls get better and bigger... local guides wait by the entrance. They are helpful to find the best route which at times involves actual climbing with hands and feet where a fall would be broken bones at least.

6 months ago Verenawrote only this for this place:

Worth every peso, the hike was incredible and our guide was just perfect. We reached the 3 waterfalls in 30 minutes and did the 7 in 2 hours. Definitely bring good shoes and a bathing suite!

8 months ago Jean-Marie Carrèrewrote only this for this place:

Wonderful hike, nevertheless slightly demanding (1,5 hour). I have no problem paying for a fee to the local community who indeed guided us very well with very interesting and insightful comments. Would highly recommend. My wife and I only have one regret : we did not plan enough time to do the long hike (4hours). Enjoy!

1 year ago Natalia Bazylwrote only this for this place:

Very good trekking, we had a very good guide. We arrived at the place at 3:00 PM, didn’t have to wait, and chose the route with 3 waterfalls. In reality, we made it almost to the 6th waterfall but didn’t have enough time as it started to get dark. Everything is well organized, the route to the 3 waterfalls can be done with children (not small ones), but beyond that, the trail gets quite difficult. We got a boost of energy and a great mood. Many thanks!

9. place gets El Divisadero

El Divisadero
Definitely deserves 8.8/10!. This place was visited and rated 1111-times

What our travelers says:

2 years ago Tony Scottwhat can I say about this place?

A rip off. We were a family group of 8 adults & 7 kids & they wanted $75 off us to go to the first waterfalls. We ended up just paying for parking & walking back down the road to the sign. If you go down there, keeping to the right, you will come to a bridge across the river. Just below the bridge to the left there is quite a big pool to bathe in

2 years ago La Protti- in short, this experience can be described as follows:

Wonderful trekking tour. Guides belong to a native diaguita community, they are highly professional and knowledgeable, though they don't speak English. The cost was less than five dollars for the first part, which includes three waterfalls. It's a fixed toll, you should not bargain. Suri caves are in the road to the starting point of this hike. In this site you'll find ancient stone paintings and a star calendar engraved in stones which used to guide the sewing seasons before the Europeans arrived to this continent.

2 years ago Louise et Claude Lepageexplained best how he liked it:

We loved our walk. We had Pedro as our guide . He showed us different herbs, we picked walnuts and we made it to a mirador to see an outstanding view. I don’t understand why people Complain on paying 5000 per person plus a good tip for your guide. Honestly what do we get for 20$ in Canada or the Us . I highly recommend go in the morning when it is cooler .

2 years ago N Bwrote only this about this place:

They could not prove that it wasn’t allowed to hike here without a guide. Also I was alone and it wasn’t even possible to go on a guided tour with just one person. So I had to turn back and I came for nothing. Sadly this is exploitation of an otherwise beautiful place to go on a quiet hike.

2 years ago Franz deNapierwrote only this for this place:

I thought Argentina is a free country but it seems to be okay to have local hoodlums hang out there trying to push hugely overpriced guides on you. Their Argument is that the last bit is too dangerous for the unaware tourist to go.

8. place definitely deserves Museum of the Vine and Wine of Cafayate, Salta, Argentina

Museum of the Vine and Wine of Cafayate, Salta, Argentina
We give 9/10!. This place was visited and rated 1130-times

What our travelers says:

1 year ago Jeff Cabarrusevaluates this place as follows:

The Museum of the Vine and Wine of Cafayate is an impressive tribute to the art of wine-making, with a special focus on wine in the Salta region. More than simply a collection of equipment and information about wine, the exhibit is saturated with the passion and dedication of the winegrowers and drinkers. It paints a story of life and beauty through the growth of the vines, the harvesting of grapes and their transformation into wine. Your entry to the museum also includes a taste of a local wine at the end, which is a lovely touch having spent the time to learn how the wines are made! The only criticism that might be made of the museum is that it's quite text-heavy, even though the content is artfully written and presented. For me, this wasn't an issue and I loved how it was done. A visit to this museum is exceptionally worthwhile for anyone visiting Cafayate and enjoying everything else it has to offer!

9 years ago Richard Longtinhow did he rate it?

We have visited many wine museums around the world, and this one stands out. Very detailed description of everything surrounding the vines and the wines, especially liked the discussion around atmospheric conditions in the region, and the impact on water quality the soil. Highly recommended.

1 year ago Mark Scanlan- why does he think this place is on the list?

The 8000 peso entry fee is worth the cost but I’m into my wines (new world mostly) so I was curious and interested to learn about the Argentinian wine history. I’d learned from my LP guidebook that Cafayate is Argentinas premier wine growing area so I ended up reading practically every paragraph or story posted in English around the passages of the well documented museum. Congratulations to the people who made the museum possible.

7 years ago Alexandros A- in short, this experience can be described as follows:

Amazing empanadas made on the spot (dough included) and cooked on a wood oven. Incredible wine serbed by people who know about wine. Great prices.

7. place - Bodega Nanni

Bodega Nanni
We give 8.8/10!. This place was visited and rated 1227-times

What our travelers says:

6 months ago Petra (Pitch)explained best how he liked it:

Sept.25: we needed to go twice, as tasting would again start @3PM & wasn't possible when we arrived @Nanni around 1.30PM. As we came back, we could choose between 3 wines for ARS4.000 or 5 wines with 1 reserva in it for ARS8.000. We already drank quite some wine this morning @another tasting, we decided to do only the 3 wine option. 2 white Torontes & 1 red Malbec, none of them could strike us, too dry. We probably had chosen the wrong option. However the service, location & inner court yard garden were excellent. Our server spoke unfortunately only Spanish

1 year ago Darylevaluates this place as follows:

Excellent lunch and incredible value for Argentina. Great to find plentiful vegetable options and a lentil salad. Steak was cooked nicely in a tasty wine sauce. Above all the service very charming and helpful, English spoken.

2 months ago penelope clinedescribed this experience as follows:

Excellent meal, excellent service! We enjoyed a delicious reserve Tannat, great gluten free options, and short ribs with a perfect charcoal flavor. Highly recommend and will be back!

1 year ago Melissa Beanevaluates this place as follows:

Nanni definitely has the best ambiance of the bodegas in town - it has a lovely courtyard where you can sit and enjoy your wine as well as a restaurant that is supposed to be good but i did not try. The tasting was nice but the wines weren’t my personal favorite. They are quite light and dry and i like a more full bodied wine - but depends what you are looking for!

3 months ago Brita Bishop- why does he think this place is on the list?

We really enjoyed our tasting at Bodega Nanni. The wine was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely in a beautiful old building. We met some friendly people too. We would have liked to go back for lunch.

6. place - Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary
We rate the place at 9.2/10!. This place was visited and rated 1263-times

What our travelers says:

8 years ago Peter Brillwrote only this about this place:

Not very impressive at all. Very bland and superficial architecture, nothing of note. If you want to see a beautiful or elegant church, go to Salta. If you want to see a lovely and quaint one, go to one of the surrounding villages. It's striking yellow colour is extraordinary, but largely for the wrong reasons: it only highlights the lack of lustre or details.

5. place definitely deserves Los Médanos

Los Médanos
We rate 9/10!. This place was visited and rated 1399-times

What our travelers says:

6 months ago Petra (Pitch)described this experience as follows:

Sept.25: I really wanted to visit sanddunes in the middle of Cafayate, only 13 minutes drive from our accommodation. I checked when the sun would go down: 7.20PM, so we went looking for these sanddunes called Los Médanos. We 1st needed to drive through narrow bushes than we parked the car & walked a few minutes till we reached the mighty sanddunes. It's possible to drive all the way to the dunes. It was spectacular, really big sanddunes & almost alone. There was a fierce wind blowing, but the sand was still really warm. We watched an incredible sundown accompanied with an ice cold beer.

1 year ago Ross Hdescribed this experience as follows:

Great sunset spot! Just 10mins drive from town and no entry fee or parking charge.

2 years ago La Prottidescribed this experience as follows:

A true discovery. The dunes offer fantastic views and are great to climb. In a sunny day you might spend a rather short time there, though worth it. I went walking from the city center, it takes almost two hours to get there and the same to get back. Take lots of water if you go walking or by bike. There's a walking path next to the road, from the joint of roads 40 and 68 to the airfield, which make it safer to walk or cycle.

1 year ago Brandon Roesgen- why does he think this place is on the list?

Short drive from town and cool place to stop into

3 years ago Brodie McGee- why does he think this place is on the list?

These sand dunes stick up out of seemingly nowhere just out of the main town area of Cafayate. They’re not very large and can get quite busy, but a nice place to sit and take in the mountainscape if you can get some solitude. Head there in the early morning to avoid others, and wear layers as you may get quite cold in winter, but once the sun hits you, you’ll warm quickly. If you do manage to get the place to yourself and can sit quietly, a large number of small animals will come out of the surrounding wild and give you a bit of a show.

4. place - Los Colorados

Los Colorados
We rate the place at 9.6/10!. This place was visited and rated 2046-times

What our travelers says:

1 year ago MT MPwhat can I say about this place?

The rock formations are absolutely stunning. It feels like being on another planet. Easy to park and find quiet places to relax and explore without crowds. Beautiful!

2 years ago Kadi Tombak- why does he think this place is on the list?

Extraterrestrial surreal stone sand clay formations, like Mojave Desert or Utah. Probably one of the best route to travel and marvel landscape have picnics by the road and enjoy these colors. A lot of Cactuses and weird plants, some of them smell really good and are even medicinal. Off season can be better so its not so hot during the day.

7 years ago Ginny Pinckardevaluates this place as follows:

Beautiful natural landscape and very few people so I was in my heaven

7 years ago Tanja Nortierexplained best how he liked it:

No words describe what you experienced there. A place you need to just visit

2 years ago John H- why does he think this place is on the list?

Worth getting out of your car and walking an hour or so into the heart of this area (preferibly in the morning)!

3. place definitely deserves Shells' Ravine

Shells' Ravine
Numerically, he has the 9.8/10!. This place was visited and rated 2149-times

What our travelers says:

6 months ago Petra (Pitch)how did he rate it?

Sept.25: following RN68 from Cafayate to Salta, this ravine is truly awesome with magnificent views! Take your time to stop wherever you can & take in those views!

9 months ago Dr Kabakibi- why does he think this place is on the list?

One of the most stunning drives I’ve ever done. The colors and rock formations are surreal—like stepping into a painting. Every few minutes, you feel like stopping the car just to stare. We took our time, pulled over at El Anfiteatro and La Garganta del Diablo (both a must), but honestly, the whole road is an open-air museum. Go around sunset if you can—the light on the red rocks is unforgettable. No entrance fee, just nature at its best.

2 years ago Erik Kafrissenwrote only this for this place:

Wow, whst an absolute treat this adventure was. We rented a camper van in Córdoba and travelled all through this area. Stunning views around every corner. You really feel like you should be out on a horse, herding llamas while keeping an eye out for armadillos, iguanas and wild foxes, all of which we saw here. The colours and hues change through the the days and sunsets and sunrises are truly spectacular sights. Lots of stops along the way to check out canyons, vistas, caves, natural amphitheatres, etc. Roads are quite good although you do have to get used to windy mountain driving. Much more influence of indigenous people in this area. Different foods too.

10 months ago Gad T: it is necessary to add to this place:

Unbelievable beautiful. ‏A wonder. Liked it so much so i went twice.

9 years ago Richard Longtinwrote only this about this place:

And I thought southwest USA was unique! Northwest Argentina in general, and this Quebrada in particular, are just as spectacular, colorful and breathtaking. I so wish I had devoted more time to explore it. Do yourself a favor and spend time here. If you're pressed for time, you can skip the Garganta del Diablo and El anfiteatro, way too touristy, and go backcountry. I recommend spending at least 3 days here.

2. place belongs to Bodega Vasija Secreta

Bodega Vasija Secreta
We give 9/10!. This place was visited and rated 2464-times

What our travelers says:

6 months ago Petra (Pitch)explained best how he liked it:

Sept.25: We started the day with walking to Bodega Vasija Secreta, approx 15 min from hostel. There were lots of trees in bloom & smelled wonderful. In this bodega you don't need to book or pay anything. Unfortunately the complete tour is only in quick Spanish, no English ones. The tasting was great Luckily there were 3 young girls who explained in short what was said. We bought a bottle of white Torontes to accompany with our dinner. Which was even cheaper as 1 cigar.

1 year ago Robexplained best how he liked it:

The free tour they offer is very good! You get a brief tour of the place where the guide talks you through the wine making process, and then you get two generous glasses of their best wines! Our guide was great and the wine was nice. The landscape was also beautiful and the best part, it was all free!

4 months ago Ingrid Fingersaid the following about this gem:

We had a wonderful meal at their restaurant today! We didn’t have a reservation, but they found a way to accommodate us and made us feel special! The chorizo steak was superb, the best we’ve had during our vacation in Argentina! A special thanks to Maximiliano, their amazing chef!!

11 months ago Kara Hwhat can I say about this place?

Free wine tour with complementary sampling at the end. The wine is average but nice to understand different types. Tours only take place in Spanish.

2 years ago Matthew Seymourevaluates this place as follows:

We especially enjoyed our time visiting this vinyard in Cafayate. Their outdoor patio was perfect for sitting and enjoying our time on their property. Their prices were extremely fair and the staff was excellent. Consider this one if you're doing a wine tour through the Cafayate wine region.

1. place is occupied by Piattelli Vineyards

Piattelli Vineyards
Definitely deserves 8.8/10!. This place was visited and rated 3567-times

What our travelers says:

6 months ago Petra (Pitch)said the following about this gem:

Sept.25 As we came from Cachi on RN40 we came along several bodegas. @home I had pinned 3 Bodega's: Trassoles, Piattelli & El Esteco which I wanted to visit, but lay outside of Cafayate (so car was needed). We decided to visit Bodega Piattelli as we were early in time & wouldn't need to come back. I remembered they had English tour @3PM. We booked tour & wine tasting for ARS20.000 =€11.55 pp. We had still 35 min before tour would start. We wanted to sit outside, but a fierce warm wind was blowing; so we went inside. @3PM the tour started & the lady explained in English about the bodega & it's history. Originally the Piattelli's came from Tuscany, Italy. They sold in 2004 their property & brand name to Americans, who are now the owner. She showed us also process & afterwards there was the tasting in small groups. For the wine tasting, you could choose different options of wines : entry level, grand reserve or special selection. It's good to be able to taste & compare them all.

4 months ago Tom Brennanwrote only this about this place:

We did a winery tour, tasting and lunch at Piattelli. The winery grounds are spectacular. The tour was reasonably good, in both Spanish and English. We chose the Blend tasting (ARS $26.000 each at Dec 2025). There were 8 wines in the tasting, including 2 of the Icon wines. Unfortunately 3 of them were oxidised (the Loscano Family Collection Cab Sav and Malbec, and the Trinita), presumably from the bottles being open for a while. Our tasting guide did open a fresh bottle of the Cab Sav, which made a big difference, but the Trinita in particular was very disappointing. After the tasting, we had lunch at the winery restaurant, with nice views over the vineyards. We had the 3 course set menu which was ARS $55.000 (Dec 2025). The entree was empanadas, which were probably a bit too doughy. I'm no empanada expert, but the ones I had in town the previous two nights were both lighter and juicier. The main was pork churrasquito, which was good. Dessert was a flan with dulce de leche, which was reasonably good, though the flan was a little overdone (curdled). The meal came with a glass of wine for each course, which were all good - the Grand Reserve Malbec in particular was probably my pick of the wines we tasted. Overall probably 3.5/5 for the meal, but good value with the wines included. Service was excellent - 5/5. Overall experience was mixed - probably about a 3.3/5. But it really shouldn't be too hard to improve the food, and to manage the quality of already opened bottles of wine at the tastings!

1 year ago Shane Stockil- why does he think this place is on the list?

One of the most incredible places I have ever been to, on my travels. I can't name any staff individually because they were all so amazing...Life is too short to keep going back to the same place, but this stunning place is worth every last second. The attention to detail is apparent from the moment you find this hidden gem. I almost don't want to post how good this place is, so that it stays my hidden gem ❤️

1 year ago Peter P.evaluates this place as follows:

We did a wine tasting here and it was amazing! It's a great vineyard to visit and discover all the process of making the wine with a guided tour. For the wine tasting, you could choose different options of wines : entry level, grand reserve or special selection. It's so good to be able to taste and compare them all. It's truly an unique experience you should try.

1 year ago Eve Davidson- why does he think this place is on the list?

The grounds of the vineyard are very elegant and we enjoyed our lunch in the covered terrace which was excellent - as was the wine. Afterwards we bought some wine to take home and the lady at the desk was very helpful by giving us a taste of two wines to help with our choice.
